Walking one evening last week I took a very bad photograph of streaming car headlights. However, I noticed when I stripped the color and inverted the photo to its negative it reminded me a bit of Robert Motherwell, a painter who has brought much beauty and fascination to the lives of countless people.
Motherwell created worlds complete with a bare strip of paint, and managed to make a single oval a moving homage to the Spanish Civil War. Like the best of artists, he seemed to work with whatever wasn’t there as beautifully as he did with what was.
Here is my photo love-image for Motherwell, courtesy of an unknown speeding driver at dusk.
